- And let us not make too many jokes about footnotes. ↩︎
- As such, the books here are frequently from academic presses, and sometimes intended for an academic audience. I am reading them anyway. ↩︎
- I like contrarian history. I cannot write that in the main body text, because then people will assume that I mean conspiracy theory, but what I mean is marginalized history. Well, I do like a polemic. ↩︎
- And as such, includes Chicago history as well, and urbanism, though I admit to being routinely disappointed in my hit rate on the latter. ↩︎
- I am tempted to remove him. I feel like it would be dishonest if I did. His earlier writing is an influence on mine. Even today he writes good material, but he is increasingly known for his NYT-set writing and working in the laundromat for authoritarian ideals.
But Royko follows him on the list. There is a lot of selective memory about Mike Royko. People remember his speaking truth to power and for the powerless and tend to omit how socially conservative he was. He defined Chicago’s identity though its lack of gay cops. He viewed ’68 in terms of the protesters violating decorum. Even his best political column works as well as it does through speaking to racists with racism towards a non-racist end.
This is not about ignoring people’s political views in favor of their technique. There is no separation, or there is much less than in fiction where that argument is sometimes used. What I would like it to be about is recognizing that people are often good and bad. I will settle for not being judged. ↩︎
